Palomino, Warmblood & Stock Horse Stud

Achieve your Dream.. Go for Gold

Monsview Kingson

Monsview Park was established in 1956 at Greta West in vic, based as a palomino Stud, by owner Bill Hooper (born 1907 to 1980).  This is where Bills passion for his love of Palomino horses blossomed and soon became one of the top Palomino breeders.  Bill showed his horses all over the state and interstate resulting in many wins, launching the stud into one of the most recognised studs in Australia for the horse Industry.

Bills first Palomino Stallion was “Silver Streak”, in 1956 he bought “Wendourie Jester”.  In 1963 Bill purchased one of the most recognised & sought after breeding of today “Bantam King” whom won many Supremes/Champions for the stud, he passed away in 1987 leaving behind a wonderful legacy of progeny.  The main breeding line of mares was selected broodmares with particular ASB breeding from top bloodlines in Aust.and N Z.

Bantam’s progeny proved to be countless winners from Pony Club, Stock Horse, jumping & of show horses.  Just to name a few:MV Regent, MV Serina, MV Bantam Kings Delight, MV Choice and MV Kingson.

Bill enjoyed presenting his palominos at shows & believed they should also do their fare share of stock work on the farm “nothing like stock work” Bill would say.  In 1970 Bill purchased ‘MV Jasper’ whom also took the show circuit by storm, sired by the wonderful stallion “Souvenir”.  Jasper sired the first Palomino we fell in love with MV Contessa (and purchased), (who was also a half sister to MV Kingson).

Joanne and I use to travel to Bills from Inverloch on weekends at times just to see the beautiful horses, falling in love with the amazing Palomino and knowing all of the studs horses off by heart.  Bill loved that Joanne would ride every horse he had, I remember when she was getting on Kingson, he would sneakily say he hasn’t been ridden for 6 months lol.

The day we received the shocking news of Bill’s passing of a heart attack, will always stay in my mind.  The family rang us that week with a proposition to purchase the stud and keep the Monsview stud name going or the horses would all have to go to the sale yards. (as if we could let that happen).  We had just purchased a farm, 40 acres with a rundown house and dairy shed, which was converted into stables, for the 2 Monsview horses we already, had.  The idea of becoming owner/breeders of a stud was daunting – consisting of 2 stallions and 12 or so mares some of which were due to foal in couple of weeks !!! But knowing these horses personally and our passion for horses we purchased the then 40 year old stud.  So we had to quickly build yards and fencing etc to accommodate their arrival, luckily Colin is a good handyman.  The mare to foal had twins, unfortunately they never made it.  The other’s foaled ok.

The last stallion that Bill purchased was a beautiful chestnut thoroughbred ‘King Dresden”, he was favorite for the VRC Darby before injuring his leg and never race again.  Bill heard about this and promptly went down to Chiquita Lodge to buy him.  Upon being asked what was he going to do with him , Bill replied “I ‘am going to breed Palominos” which caused horror at the lodge.  Bill loved that horse and his pedigree including ‘Ribot’ (which is also in Kingson and Contessa pedigree), nearly all the mares that arrived at our farm where in foal to him.  Sadly while Bill took a small well deserved holiday to Canada, King Dresden passed away.  Bill found out that King Dresden was dead along with his favorite ASB broodmare ‘Brandy Delight’.  ‘They had produced the best horses I have ever breed’ Bill would say.  Fortunately for us 1 of the stallions to arrive at the farm was ‘MV Dresden Playboy’ by King Dresden.  Dresden Playboy a liver chestnut 16.1hh thoroughbred became a wonderful asset to the stud for us in producing many great coloured Palomino’s.

The other stallion to arrive was none other than ‘MV Kingson’ as an 8 year old he was only trained to stock work and in Joanne words ‘I can train him up for dressage’ and that she did along with his show career.   Kingson has sired many foals, as in MV Spirit of Bantam & MV King Dresden and now into his 33rd year still gets the royal treatment of being stabled and fed twice a day.  Kingson since went on to become one of the most recognised Palomino stallions of today.

APHA Championships 1990 – to win Supreme Led Of Show, King had to beat Grand champion Geld - "MV Spirit of Bantam" (son) and Grand Champion Mare - MV Amber Gold (sister).

Contessa and Kingson where both lead horses in the ‘Palomino Promotion Team’.  Joanne also had the opportunity to travel to Portugal with a group of riders to train under the famous world renowned ‘Nuno Olivera’. 1925–1989)Nuno was widely acknowledged as a master of the art of dressage.  His teachings have inspired riders and trainers all over the world to adopt the 'baroque' or 'classical' style of working with the horse; an art which goes back hundreds of years and encompasses the fundamentals which most 'modern' disciplines can be traced back to.  This bases of training is incorporated into the training of our horses, along with Colin’s expertise’s in handling the young stock.  Nuno also traveled to Australia teaching where we took contessa to lessons with this master & he immediately fell in love with her and trained us to perform Piaffe announcing to the ordinance ‘that there is only one thing wrong with this horse – she is too big to fit in my suite case to take home’.  Contessa only had a couple of foals, sadly we have no progeny by this mare to pass through the stud.

Notable broodmare lines ‘MV Tarita Rose’ by MV Jasper, ‘MV Kelly Country’.  Another asset to our stud was the lovely palomino mare ‘MV Choice’ (bloodlines Sindh) who was always joined to MV Dresden Playboy, they had many great foals some to name; ‘MV Golden Edition’ (resident stallion), who also won many awards in open company and Palomino before retiring to stud duties, ‘MV River Dance’ (dec 2013)- sire of current award winning horses MV Sunday Rose & MV River Reign‘.  MV Golden Playgirl’ – award winning Palomino in HRCAV & Dressage.  ‘MV Gold Cidium’ sold as a 2year to SA after winning his classes at Melb Royal, and since sired many great horses.

5 years ago we purchased our Warmblood stallion ‘MV Rituel’ a rising 4 year old just green broken with the intent to breed beautiful warmblood palominos it’s been a long time in the making but finally he has produced the goods with the stunning and flashy ‘MV Isabella’ out of MV Zena.  Isabella presently a yearling is already showing success in the show ring.   She also has a little palomino warmblood sister on the ground born this season.  Rituel also has another Palomino filly born this season and will be up for sale when weaned.  MV rituel is by the famous imported warmblood stallion AEA Rituel out of ASB broodmare with impeccable breeding, MV Rituel competed at Royal Melbourne Horse Show as a 4 year old, to take out Reserve Champion Warmblood Stallion/Colt.  Since then he has become Joanne’s riding horse having trained him to medium dressage in anticipation of his pending gelding, ready to compete in dressage, but it is hard to geld him whilst he is producing such beautiful babies.

The stud now in its 57th year, at Monsview Park, Colin, Mary and Joanne aim to breed quality big Golden Palominos with the temperament and soundness to excel in Dressage, Showing All round Horsemanship and carry on the legacy.
